Introducing the Hottest Sport on Sand: Beach Tennis! Serve's up!!! Take the fun and fast-paced sport of tennis... Combine it with the sun, sea and sand of the beach... And you have beach tennis, the most electrifying new sport to hit the U.S.!
Beach tennis merges the worlds of tennis and beach volleyball into one exciting sport. It can be played both competitively and at the recreational level, because it’s so simple to play, and it appeals to people of all ages.
So what exactly is beach tennis? It’s like regular tennis except it’s played on a regulation beach volleyball court. Using tennis racquets, two players on each team volley back and forth, hitting a slightly pressure less tennis ball directly over the net without letting it bounce... It’s hard to make the ball bounce on sand! One hit per team is all that’s allowed.
Your team scores a point each time your opponents hit the ball outside the lines or let it hit the sand. There is only one serve in beach tennis. The score is kept just like in regular tennis. Tournaments are played all over the world, with small variations of the game in different parts of the world. Look for beach tennis on both coasts of the United States.
Topspin Tennis Director, Rick Simeon, is South Florida's Beach Tennis USA Licensee. The area includes West Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade County. Rick will be holding tournaments, running leagues, and promoting the great sport of beach tennis.
Starting this spring, the Sunset Lakes Tennis Club will host the first beach tennis league ever held in South Florida. The first beach tennis academy is also in the process of being formalized. This sport is really catching on so start practicing!
